PBS says McCartney comment wasn’t part of the Gershwin Award ceremony.
That comment that music legend Paul McCartney made about former President George W. Bush at the White House is back again. “after the last eight years, it’s great to have a president who knows what a library is.” The former Beatle said after the Gershwin Award ceremony had ended.
While the comment itself may have been uncalled for, especially at the White House, it was after the ceremony had ended. “It wasn’t even in the body of the show so no, it wasn’t difficult” to cut, said Mary Stewart, vice president for external affairs for PBS affiliate WETA.
The Gershwin Prize honors “the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world’s culture” according to Library of Congress Librarian James H. Billington. It was created by the Library of Congress in 2007. Singer/Songwriter Paul Simon was the first recipient of the prize. Stevie Wonder was awarded the prize in 2008.
Other prizes given by the Library are the Living Legend, awarded for creative contributions to American life. The Kluge Prize for contribution to the Intellectual Arts is also give out by the Library of congress. Perhaps the fact that it was cut by PBS at all will bring more attention to the show than it normally would.
